Post-Pandemic Vocabulary: Neologisms Of The New Normality
From social distancing, flattening the curve, to multiple medical, social, and governmental words, the global pandemic has quickly enriched our language to include many words and phrases once exclusive to field professionals only. But language vocabularies have also stretched a lot, proving to be remarkably robust and adaptive as well. Here's a list of some of the buzzwords (read motivation & productivity killers) that came to light in the past few months.
1| T'wired
When you're tired but wired, your body and mind are being pulled in two directions at once. You seem fully present, active, and engaged, but inside, you feel bone-deep fatigue, led by a combination of not enough rest and excessive stimulation.
2| Blursday
Blursday is a term that describes the merging of minutes, hours, and days, with no boundaries delineating one from the other. Your life is on pause. No real travel. No commutes. Every day is the same, all days blurred together.
3| Languishing
AKA the neglected middle child of mental health. Something like a blah feeling. It is a sense of dormancy and emptiness that has been named the emotion of 2021. When languishing, people experience decreased motivation, loss of concentration, aimlessness, feelings of numbness, and lethargy.
4| Doomscrolling
Also known as Doomsurfing, is the zombie-like behavior of navigating and spending too much time on the internet and social media obsessively absorbing negative news. The effect of this unconscious habit varies from person to person but usually can provoke extra anxiety, depression, and isolation emotions.
5| Zoom fatigue
It is the tiredness associated with an overload of video meetings. Zoom fatigue causes emotional and physical symptoms like demotivation, burnout, headaches, eye irritation, blurred and double vision, among others.
